Review: 'Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online' (PC) IFI

Last year, the Neptunia series brought out Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Godesses Online. We even reviewed it for the PS4. Now out for PC, we look to see how the port did.

Not much new to say about the story. Neptunia and everyone is back, but this time they join an online game in which they play characters “suspiciously” like themselves. There they find out they need to save the world yet again, this time from a Demon-jester type guy. Honestly, same as last time – not the strongest story, but it works.

Controls are different though. On the PS4 they worked nicely. On the PC it was a little different. Usually PC controls for a ported game are pretty intuitive, but for some reason, I kept killing myself by hitting the wrong attack button – the weird thing is I don't think they switched it. Honestly, they're fun, and that part's probably on me – just a minor heads up in case it isn't just me.

The art and graphics were the same, but as with any Neptunia game, it's the same – the still art is fantastic but still a little creepy during the talking segments. The 3D graphics were a mix of highly detailed graphics, over the top manga graphics and low-res graphics for a somewhat off, yet still good, pastiche.

Gameplay was identical too, except with new controls. Combat is still good fighting and running fun that's pretty perfect, while the talking still screens still seem off. Same as it ever was, but if it works, it works.

For music and sound, again, not much new, but for some reason, I think the port tuned it a little better. The music feels bouncier and more in the game than I remember. The pop/techno/orchestral action soundtrack sounded more 'with it', and it was actually pretty thrilling. Voice acting was good too, except for the repetitiveness. When fighting, you hear the same things every 3-4 fighting shouts, and it seems like a never ending loop at times.

The port didn't bring any frame rate issues, but it did bring a glitch that I noticed. When fighting for a prolonged time, during a jump slash attack, she would get stuck in the air, then the game froze, then my windows window said the game encountered an error and needed to close. It only happened twice, and it was only during big fights, but still, it happened. But besides that one thing everything seemed alright.

Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Godesses Online for the PC mostly improves on the console version – again, it's mostly the same game, and except for a glitch I noticed, it seemed to have gotten bumps in quality here and there. If you're a fan and you were waiting for the PC release, have no fear, it's perfectly fine.

Final Score: 8 out of 10
